Education

Andrews ISD has built a strong education program at Andrews High School and through the AISD Teacher Academy. These programs have grown with the need for high quality teachers in the state, Permian Basin and Andrews.

Students have three different opportunities to participate in education coursework: Public Services Endorsement at AHS, Associate of Arts in Teaching through Dual Credit, and the AISD Teacher Academy offered after high school graduation.

PUBLIC SERVICES ENDORSEMENT

Students that are not ready to start college courses can seek the Public Services Endorsement by taking three courses within the Education and Training Program of Study. Students following this path will take Principles of Human Service, Child Development, Principles of Education their junior year, and Instructional Practices their senior year. Instructional Practices is the course that allows students to participate in Ready, Set, Teach! (RST).

Ready, Set, Teach! (RST)

In Ready, Set, Teach! (RST), students are assigned a mentor teacher that they work with two periods every day at a campus in the district. RST students fulfill a variety of roles in their assigned classroom, including organizing, grading, mentoring, and teaching. Through this program of study students are giving a hands-on learning experience to truly understand the requirements and rewards of becoming a teacher.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN TEACHING (AAT)

Students interested in taking college classes, or dual credit, are given the opportunity to apply to be in the AAT program. In this program, students earn an Associate Degree through Odessa College by concurrently completing 60+ college hours while completing their high school course requirements. Students complete at least the 42 core hours required for most degrees plus 18 hours targeted towards a degree in education. Students also take required high school courses that help them prepare for a degree in teaching, such as Principles of Education and Instructional Practices (Ready, Set, Teach!). Students are currently able to pursue an AAT in Early Childhood-6th Grade, 7-12 English, and 7-12 History.

AISD TEACHER ACADEMY

Students that want to be a teacher also have the opportunity to apply to be a part of the AISD Teacher Academy at the end of their senior year. The AISD Teacher Academy allows students that graduate from high school to be hired as a paraprofessional in the district. As they are working as a paraprofessional, they also are completing a degree in education. The best part of this program is that students are reimbursed for their college coursework as long as they agree to teach in the district for three years after completing their degree and certification.

Coursework for the AISD Teacher Academy is completed at Odessa College and Sul Ross State University. Students first complete their Associate of Arts in Teaching degree at Odessa College. Students can complete this degree while in high school if they start with the AAT program. Then they transfer to Sul Ross State University to complete their Bachelor of Arts in Education.

Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE)

Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) is a Career and Technical Student Organization. This organization was created to allow young women and men explore the teaching profession. Students are able to compete in different events at the Regional, State, and National Level. Competitions include Interactive Bulletin Boards, Teacher Created Materials, Exploring Education Careers, and more! TAFE students also participate in service activities that positively promote the field of education.
